Since its establishment in the first half of the thirteenth century, the University of Siena has demonstrated a strong awareness and responsibility for its role in society. The university places priority on protecting and empowering its internal communities, including teachers, staff, and most importantly, students.

Throughout the year 2019, the university carried out numerous initiatives in line with this commitment. Below is a summarized overview of these initiatives, categorized based on their relevance to teachers and PTA (technical and administrative staff), as well as students.

Academic and technical administrative staff

For more detailed information regarding initiatives related to academic and technical administrative staff, we recommend referring to the documentation prepared by the University’s Single Committee of Guarantee for equal opportunities, well-being enhancement, and anti-discrimination (CUG). The CUG has implemented various activities and projects as part of the Positive Actions Plan (PAP) for the period 2019-2021.

The PAP is a policy document designed to establish initiatives aimed at eliminating barriers to achieve full and effective equality of opportunity between men and women.

The proposed actions are organized under the following themes:

  1. Organizational well-being, corporate welfare, and work-life balance
  2. Training, communication, and awareness
  3. Equal opportunities and combating discrimination

Students

The University of Siena has a student enrollment of over 15,000 for the academic year 2019/2020, with an average of approximately one thousand students enrolled in each of its 15 departments.

Around 66% of the students come from Tuscany and Central Italy. The university also attracts students from various regions across Italy, with 26% from southern regions and 8% from northern regions.

To ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities, the University of Siena operates the Office for Reception of Disabled Persons and DSA Services, which enables over 200 students with difficulties to access teaching and university services. This reflects the university’s commitment to social inclusion and the elimination of inequalities in all forms.

The internationalization efforts of the University of Siena have resulted in the enrollment of approximately 400 foreign students annually. Among these, 37% are from other European countries, another 37% come from Asia, 21% from African countries, and 5% from the American continent.

Orientation

Recognizing the diverse backgrounds, cultures, needs, and expectations of its student community, the University of Siena has implemented numerous inclusive initiatives throughout 2019. These initiatives aim to support and guide students in their academic journey. Some examples include:

  • Inclusion measures for lower income population: the University has implemented a range of initiatives, supported by funding, to facilitate studying and provide alternative and widespread opportunities for students to pursue their studies. Based on the data received, during the academic year 2019-2020, a total of 3,764 students, including those enrolled in doctoral programs, were awarded scholarships. This significant number highlights the accessibility of our University’s courses.
  • Support measures for students with disabilities or specific learning disabilities (DSA): The University of Siena, through the Office for Reception of Disabled Persons and DSA Services, facilitates access to education and services for over 200 students facing difficulties. This commitment stems from our dedication to promoting social inclusion and eliminating inequalities in all their manifestations.
  • Measures to welcome refugee students and asylum seekers: the University of Siena is actively engaged in promoting the reception and inclusion of refugee students and asylum seekers.

To support these efforts, in 2015, we established the UNISI CARES initiative. Through this program, a group of experts from the University provides free advice, information, and training support to individuals and institutions involved in reception policies on the local level.

In addition, we have joined the network of Universities for Peace, promoted by the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities (CRUI).

Furthermore, in 2019, the university, in collaboration with the Department of Political and International Sciences, participated in the Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership project called “Together.” This project aimed to promote best practices for the reception of refugee students and asylum seekers within the academic community.

These initiatives demonstrate our dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, including those who have sought refuge in our country.

Support measures to combat discrimination on grounds of ethnic origin and sexual orientation.

The University of Siena has implemented various measures and initiatives to foster inclusive practices, particularly addressing discrimination based on national, ethnic, and religious origin, as well as gender identity and sexual orientation.

One notable service is “Lo sportello di ascolto” which provides personal support to anyone in need. Additionally, the ALIAS Career program is crucial in creating a supportive and privacy-conscious study environment, facilitated through the use of a dual enrollment system.

To promote inclusivity, the Santa Chiara Lab, in collaboration with several departments and the Alumni Association, organizes training activities focusing on soft skills. In 2019, some notable programs included:

  • Orientation Programs: The university organizes comprehensive orientation programs to help new students familiarize themselves with the campus, facilities, academic programs, and support services available. These programs provide essential information and guidance to ensure a smooth transition into university life.

  • Mentorship Programs: The university offers mentorship programs where experienced students, faculty members, or staff members provide guidance and support to new students. These mentors help students navigate university life, provide academic advice, and offer assistance in addressing any challenges they may encounter.

  • Academic Support Services: The University of Siena provides a range of academic support services, such as tutoring, study groups, and writing centers, to help students enhance their learning and academic performance. These services are designed to cater to the specific needs of students and promote their success.

  • Cultural and Social Integration: The university organizes events, workshops, and cultural activities to foster cultural and social integration among students. These initiatives provide opportunities for students to interact, exchange experiences, and create a sense of community within the university.

  • Accessibility Services: The University of Siena is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for all students. It provides accessibility services for students with disabilities, including accommodations, assistive technologies, and specialized support, to facilitate their full participation in academic and campus life.

  • These initiatives, among others, reflect the university’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, promoting their academic success, personal development, and overall well-being.
